Why This System

MACO hardware is not visible on the finished window - you are maintaining the mechanism, not the surface, which requires understanding how the fitting system works rather than just what it looks like. The MACO tilt-and-turn system has specific lubrication points at the hinge scissors, the corner transfer pieces, and the keep engagement points - missing any one of these leaves the mechanism partially maintained. Glass

  • Standard glass cleaning technique applies. MACO is a hardware supplier - the glass cleaning approach is determined by the window manufacturer's frame material.
  • Keep cleaning solution away from hardware during glass cleaning. Squeegee drips onto exposed mechanism components deposit mineral residue that accelerates wear.
  • After cleaning, operate the window through full tilt and turn cycle to confirm mechanism moves freely.
  • Check the glass unit seal condition at the same time - a failed glass seal on a window with worn hardware means two simultaneous faults.

Frames

  • Clean frames according to material - PVC, aluminium, or timber depending on the window manufacturer's product.
  • Do not allow alkaline or acidic frame cleaners to run onto MACO hardware finishes - the plating and lacquer on hardware is less chemical-resistant than the frame material.
  • Wipe hardware surfaces with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not leave frame cleaning solution on hardware.
  • Check the drainage slots in the frame base at every clean - blocked drainage causes water to pool at the sash base where hardware is most vulnerable to corrosion.

Hardware

  • Lubricate all moving points annually: hinge scissors, corner transfer pieces, espagnolette rod guides, locking cams, and keep engagement surfaces.
  • Use light machine oil or PTFE spray. Do not use thick grease - it attracts dust and gums up the mechanism over time.

  • Check hinge scissors for lateral play - a sash that can be pushed sideways when open means the scissors pivot is worn and needs replacement.

This is how I clean MACO Beschläge windows. The tools and technique below come from 25 years of daily professional work on the glass. Every step has been tested on real installations and adapted specifically for MACO Beschläge systems.

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. This is the same sequence I use on every MACO Beschläge installation.

  1. 1

    Preparation -- before any water touches the glass

    Fill the bucket with at least 10 litres of water. Add soap for cleaning power -- enough to cut through environmental deposits, not so much you are fighting foam.

    Before touching the glass, brush down the surface to remove loose dust, spiderwebs, and debris. Any grit left on the glass during the wash phase risks scratching during agitation.

    Check the aluminium frame condition before you start. Confirm which cleaning product is safe for that surface before opening any bottle.

    Cover anything below the windows that cannot be moved.

  2. 2

    Agitation -- apply and work the solution

    Dip the microfiber T-bar completely into the soap water, both sides. Remove excess water with your hand so it does not drip. Apply the solution across the entire glass surface with overlapping passes.

    The goal is to fully dissolve and release every deposit from the glass surface. Anything not released during agitation gets transported across the glass by the squeegee as a smear.

    For stubborn spots -- insect marks, salt residue, environmental deposits -- re-apply soap water and allow it to soak for a full minute before agitating again. Use more soap water, not more pressure.

    For panels above arm reach: attach the T-bar to an extension pole. Work in sections -- top first, then middle, then bottom -- keeping each section wet until you squeegee it.

    Rinse the T-bar cover regularly during the job. A dirty applicator causes microscopic scratches that accumulate over time.

  3. 3

    Detail the frame edge before squeegeeing

    Use your 100% cotton towelling rag, finger pressed into the fabric, to work into every junction and remove pooled soap water before the squeegee pass.

    This prevents drips running down onto already-cleaned areas during squeegeeing and keeps soap water out of drainage channels.

    On Maco aluminium frames, pay particular attention to the bottom edge where glass meets the frame sill -- water pooled here runs into drainage openings and leaves residue over time.

    The squeegee

    Tilt the squeegee at a slight angle so soap water spills from one side of the channel only -- not both. If the rubber is jumping or squeaking, either the rubber is not lubricated enough or the glass surface has warmed.

    Cutting in: start with the rubber blade making first contact on a dry edge of the glass.

    Side to side: horizontal passes across the panel. Works well on wide sections. Top to bottom: vertical passes down the panel. Works well on tall narrow sections.

    The J tune: one smooth unbroken motion top to bottom, wrist rotating at each end to reverse without lifting the rubber. The most efficient method on larger panels -- but it requires training before applying it to premium glass.

    Wipe the rubber dry after every pass. Overlap each stroke by 2-3 cm.

    Final edge detailing

    After squeegeeing, there is always a residual line of water along the bottom edge and at the panel sides. Take a dry cotton rag, fold to a clean corner, and detail these edges in one smooth pass.

    On Maco frames, the bottom edge where glass meets the sill requires the most careful attention. Water left here runs into drainage and leaves residue that affects the next clean.

    Rotate the rag to a clean section after every pass. If the rag picks up grit at any point, replace it immediately.

    Frame wipe and hardware check

    On Maco powder-coated aluminium frames: use pH-neutral cleaner only, never abrasive pads or steel wool. Dry immediately after wiping.

    Check that all drainage openings are clear and unobstructed. Water must be able to flow freely -- a blocked channel leads to accumulation that affects seal performance over time.

    Operate every opening window through its full range. Stiff handles or resistance at locking points indicate hardware that needs lubrication. Flag it to the owner rather than forcing it.

Pro Tips

  • Corner transfer pieces are the most commonly seized point in any tilt-and-turn mechanism. Give them an extra application if you feel any resistance in the handle at the 45-degree position.
  • PTFE spray is better than oil in kitchens and bathrooms where grease and dust combine to gum up oil-lubricated mechanisms quickly.
  • A sash that drops 2 to 3mm on opening usually means a dry or worn hinge scissors - lubricate first and recheck. If the drop persists after lubrication, the scissors pivot is worn.
  • Never use WD-40 as a long-term lubricant on window hardware. It displaces moisture short-term but leaves no protective film and the mechanism is drier six months later than before you applied it.
  • MACO hardware finishes in white or gold are lacquered over a base plating. Standard glass cleaner running onto the hardware from above deposits mineral residue that dulls the finish - wipe it off before it dries.
  • The espagnolette rod on a tilt-and-turn window runs in a channel in the sash edge. Grime builds in this channel and acts as an abrasive on the rod. Clean the channel out with a damp cloth before oiling.
  • If a handle suddenly becomes very light to operate and the window does not feel locked, check whether a locking cam has sheared off the rod. This is rare but happens on heavily used windows and the window is insecure until repaired.

What NOT To Do

  • Do not use thick grease on MACO mechanisms - it attracts dust, builds up in guide channels, and makes the mechanism harder to operate within two years.
  • Do not allow alkaline frame cleaners to pool on hardware finishes - the lacquer on coloured and plated finishes degrades under repeated alkali exposure.
  • Do not force a stiff handle - forcing a stiff MACO mechanism bends the espagnolette rod, which then requires replacement rather than lubrication.
  • Do not adjust keeps with the window open - keep adjustment must be done with the window closed and the cam in contact with the keep face.
  • Do not ignore a sash that drops on opening - progressive hinge scissors wear accelerates once the pivot starts to work loose.
