Streaks are the single most frustrating part of cleaning your own windows. You wipe, you buff, you stand back, and there they are again in the light. After twenty five years of cleaning glass professionally, from homes in Melbourne to towers in Vienna, I can tell you the truth: streaks are almost never bad luck. They are a technique problem, and technique can be learned.

Why glass streaks in the first place
A streak is just dirt or cleaning solution that got moved around instead of removed. It happens for three common reasons. You did not loosen the dirt properly before trying to lift it. You left too much soap in the water, so a film dries on the glass. Or you cleaned in direct sun, so the water dried before you could clear it.
Notice what all three have in common. They are about preparation and process, not about the product in the bottle. The magic was never in a special spray. It is in how you prepare the glass and how you clear the water.
The fix: prepare, then remove
Professional window cleaning is two moves, in order. First you agitate the dirt so it dissolves, ready for the squeegee to shave away. Then you clear the water in one clean pass. Most people rush straight to the second move and wonder why they fight streaks all day.
Wet the glass with clean water and a small squirt of dish soap, a few cents a bucket. Work a T-bar applicator or scrubber across the whole pane, into the corners, until the dirt is broken up and floating in the water. Do not skimp on this. The whole job is won here, before the squeegee ever touches the glass.
The squeegee stroke that removes streaks
Now the squeegee. Hold it at a slight angle, around forty five degrees, so it shaves the water off cleanly rather than pushing a wave in front of it. Overlap each stroke slightly into the clean, dry part you just did. After every stroke, wipe the rubber with a clean 100% cotton towelling rag so you are never dragging dirty water back across the glass.
There are three squeegee turns a professional uses to clear a whole pane without lifting the blade: side to side, top to bottom, and the turn with a twist, which we call the J tune. Learning to link them is what separates a slow, streaky clean from a fast, flawless one. The basic turns are the foundation. The turn with a twist is where the real fluency comes in, and it is the heart of the training.
Finish with detailing
The last streaks always hide at the edges. Once the pane is clear, run a dry cotton rag around the frame and along the bottom edge to catch any water the squeegee left behind. This step, detailing, is what makes the difference between clean and professionally clean.
The five habits that kill streaks for good
Keep your rubber fresh. A worn squeegee rubber streaks no matter how good your stroke is, and a new one costs a dollar or two. Keep your water clean and your soap light. Never clean in direct sun. Wipe your blade after every stroke. And prepare the glass properly before you ever pick up the squeegee. Do those five things and streaks stop being a mystery.
