How to Start a Window Cleaning Business: Master the Skill First

How to Start a Window Cleaning Business in 2026: Why Mastering the Skill First Is the Real Business Plan

Every article about starting a window cleaning business tells you the same thing. Register your LLC. Get insurance. Buy a van. Build a website. Knock on doors.

None of that matters if you can't clean a window properly.

I know because I've watched it happen. People invest in branding, equipment, and marketing before they invest in the one thing that actually makes the business work: the skill itself. They show up to their first paying job, leave streaks on the glass, and the customer never calls back. Their Google reviews start with three stars instead of five. Their referral engine never starts because there's nothing worth referring.

I cleaned my first window professionally in Melbourne in 1999. Twenty-five years later, I run a window cleaning business in Vienna that's booked a year in advance with 35+ five-star reviews. And I can tell you with certainty: everything I've built started with one thing — learning to clean a window perfectly.

The business plan came later. The skill came first.

The Gap Nobody Talks About

There's no shortage of information about starting a business. AI can write you a business plan in minutes. YouTube has thousands of videos about marketing, pricing, and finding customers. Google will answer any question about business registration, insurance, or tax structure.

But none of that teaches you how to hold a squeegee at the right angle. None of it builds the muscle memory you need to deliver streak-free results consistently. None of it prepares your hands for the actual work.

Window cleaning is a physical skill. Like playing guitar or driving a car, you can understand the theory completely and still fail at the execution. The difference between 42 degrees and 48 degrees on your squeegee blade is the difference between a crystal-clear window and streaks that catch every ray of sunlight.

This is the gap. Business advice is everywhere. Skill training barely exists.

That's why I created the world's first AR window cleaning training platform — because I realised the biggest barrier to success in this industry isn't business knowledge. It's technique.

What "Mastering the Skill" Actually Means

When I say "master the skill first," I'm talking about specific, learnable techniques — not some vague idea of "getting good at cleaning."

Here's what professional window cleaning actually requires:

The 45-degree squeegee angle. This is the foundation of everything. Hold the blade too steep and it skips across the glass, leaving water behind. Too flat and it pushes water sideways instead of collecting it. At 45 degrees, the blade creates a wave of water in front of it that carries dirt cleanly to the edge. This one detail separates professionals from amateurs.

Consistent pressure and speed. Your squeegee stroke needs to be smooth and continuous — same pressure from start to finish, same speed across the entire pane. Inconsistency creates uneven drying, which creates streaks. This is muscle memory, and muscle memory only develops through practice.

The three fundamental squeegee turns. Side-to-side, top-to-bottom, and the turn with a twist. These three movements cover every window you'll ever encounter. Master them, and you can clean any window in any building.

Solution application. How you apply your cleaning solution matters as much as how you remove it. The scrubber/applicator does the actual cleaning — loosening dirt, breaking down oils from fingerprints, saturating the glass. Most beginners rush this step and wonder why the squeegee doesn't work properly.

Edge detailing. The last 10% of the job creates 90% of the visible quality. After squeegeeing, a thin line of water sits along every edge. If you don't detail those edges with a lint-free cloth — one smooth pass, not back-and-forth rubbing — that water drips down onto clean glass and creates streaks.

Pole technique. Reaching second-story windows from the ground requires a different set of movements. Working above your head with an extension pole changes the angle, the pressure, and the feedback you feel through the tool. This takes specific practice.

Safety. Understanding safe ladder use, proper body positioning, and when to use pole technique instead of climbing. This isn't optional — it's the foundation of a professional operation.

None of these things are complicated. But all of them require practice. And practising wrong is worse than not practising at all, because you develop bad habits that become harder to fix the longer you do them.

Why I Built a Training System Around This

I didn't always think training mattered this much.

When I started in Melbourne, there was no training. I picked up a squeegee, cleaned a window, and figured it out through trial and error. It took me months to develop consistent technique. I scratched glass. I left streaks. I cleaned windows twice that should have been cleaned once.

I wasn't supposed to succeed. I have dyslexia. Traditional learning was never my strength. But window cleaning was different — it was physical, visual, immediate. You could see the result instantly. And that immediate feedback loop is what taught me: when you get the technique right, the transformation is undeniable.

Twenty-five years of that feedback loop — from soaring skyscrapers to cozy family homes, from Geoffrey Rush's windows in Melbourne to Austrian TV filming "Extreme Window Cleaning" — gave me something I couldn't have learned any other way: a deep understanding of exactly what makes the difference between amateur and professional results.

That experience became the 5-Step Training System I teach today.

The 5-Step System: How Beginners Become Professionals

I designed this system to compress years of trial and error into hours of focused learning. Each step builds on the last.

Step 1: The Window Cleaning Manifesto (Free — 5 Minutes)

This is where everyone starts. Five minutes of essential training that gives you the foundation for streak-free technique: the essential tool list, the three squeegee turns, soap water preparation, and the basic process that works.

It's free because I want you to see real results before you spend anything. Clean one window with this method. See the transformation. Then decide if you want to go deeper.

Step 2: The AR Window Cleaning Training Tool

This is what makes our training different from everything else available — and it's the reason I can say "world's first" without any competitor being able to challenge it.

The AR Training Tool uses augmented reality on your phone to visualise each squeegee turn in your actual space. You see the side-to-side turn, the top-to-bottom turn, and the turn with a twist — overlaid on real windows through your camera.

Why does this matter? Because muscle memory without breaking glass. You can practice the movements dozens of times without wasting cleaning solution, without making mistakes on real windows, and without developing bad habits. Videos show you what to do. AR shows you what YOU should be doing, in your space, in real-time.

Most beginners need 10-15 practice windows before the technique starts feeling natural. With AR, you can do that practice in an afternoon.

Step 3: The Mastery Course (90 Minutes — Lifetime Access)

This is the complete professional skill development programme. Twenty-five years of experience compiled into short video modules that take you from beginner to professional:

Safety checklists and proper procedures. Tool instructions and maintenance — what to buy, how to care for it. Advanced squeegee techniques in detail. How to clean with a pole for high windows. Eco-friendly window cleaning with pure water systems. Plus text and audio versions of the entire course so you can learn however suits you best.

By the end of this training, you will have the skills and confidence to achieve sparkling clean windows — whether for your own home, your first paying customer, or your twentieth.

Step 4: The Clear View Creator App

Track your progress, document your transformation with photos, and connect with our private community of learners. This is especially valuable for anyone building a business — you can see your improvement over time and build a portfolio of before-and-after work that becomes your most powerful marketing tool.

Step 5: AMA — Ask Me Anything

Direct access to me. Twenty-five years of experience, available through personalised coaching sessions where I can guide you through your specific challenges, answer your questions, and help you through the exact steps I took to build my business.

This is where my experience becomes your shortcut. Every mistake I made, every technique I perfected, every business lesson I learned — available to you directly, not through a generic course but through a conversation about YOUR specific situation.

The Business Builds on the Skill — Not the Other Way Around

Here's what I've seen happen when people train properly before they start their business:

Their first customer gets a perfect result. That customer leaves a five-star review. That review attracts the next customer. That customer refers a friend. The flywheel starts from day one — because the work speaks for itself.

Compare that to someone who shows up untrained. Streaky windows. An awkward apology. A three-star review or no review at all. Then months of trying to overcome that first impression.

The skill is the engine. The business is the vehicle. You wouldn't drive a car without an engine and hope it moves. Don't start a business without the skill and hope it grows.

Everything else — the business registration, the insurance, the marketing, the website — you can figure out. There's a world of free information and AI tools that will help you build those things. But nobody can give you the physical ability to hold a squeegee at 45 degrees with consistent pressure across a full stroke. That comes from training and practice.

The Real Cost of NOT Training

Let me be specific about what untrained cleaning looks like in business terms.

You take your first job. You clean 15 windows. Three of them have visible streaks. The customer notices but doesn't say anything — they just don't call you back. They don't leave a review. They don't refer you to their neighbour. One job, zero momentum.

Now multiply that by your first ten jobs. Even if only half of them have issues, you've lost five potential repeat customers and five potential referral sources. In an industry built on word-of-mouth and Google reviews, those first impressions determine whether your business flies or stalls.

Our students, after completing the training, deliver professional-quality results from their very first paying job. Not their tenth. Their first. That's the difference proper skill development makes.

Your Investment in Skill vs. Your Investment in Everything Else

The complete Course program — Manifesto, AR Training Tool, and Mastery Course — costs $69. That's lifetime access to the entire system.

Compare that to in-person window cleaning schools that charge $1,500-$2,000 for a weekend workshop with limited practice time. Or compare it to the cost of learning through trial and error — lost customers, bad reviews, damaged glass, wasted supplies.

$69 for the skill that makes everything else work.

After that, yes — register your business. Get insurance. Set up your Google profile. Build a simple website. AI and free online resources will help you with all of that. But do it knowing that when your first customer watches you clean their windows, they'll see professional results. That confidence — in your technique and in yourself — is what builds a business.

Start With the Skill

I wasn't supposed to succeed. Dyslexia made traditional learning difficult. But window cleaning taught me something powerful: mastery isn't about talent. It's about showing up, learning the right technique, and practising until your hands know what to do.

You can't blend in if you were born to shine.

That first window I cleaned in Melbourne in 1999 changed my life. Not because the business plan was perfect — I didn't have one. But because I discovered I could master something. And that mastery became the foundation for everything that followed.

Start with the skill. The business follows.
