The 45-degree squeegee angle. This is the foundation of everything. Hold the blade too steep and it skips across the glass, leaving water behind. Too flat and it pushes water sideways instead of collecting it. At 45 degrees, the blade creates a wave of water in front of it that carries dirt cleanly to the edge. This one detail separates professionals from amateurs.
Consistent pressure and speed. Your squeegee stroke needs to be smooth and continuous — same pressure from start to finish, same speed across the entire pane. Inconsistency creates uneven drying, which creates streaks. This is muscle memory, and muscle memory only develops through practice.
The three fundamental squeegee turns. Side-to-side, top-to-bottom, and the turn with a twist. These three movements cover every window you'll ever encounter. Master them, and you can clean any window in any building.
Solution application. How you apply your cleaning solution matters as much as how you remove it. The scrubber/applicator does the actual cleaning — loosening dirt, breaking down oils from fingerprints, saturating the glass. Most beginners rush this step and wonder why the squeegee doesn't work properly.
Edge detailing. The last 10% of the job creates 90% of the visible quality. After squeegeeing, a thin line of water sits along every edge. If you don't detail those edges with a lint-free cloth — one smooth pass, not back-and-forth rubbing — that water drips down onto clean glass and creates streaks.
Pole technique. Reaching second-story windows from the ground requires a different set of movements. Working above your head with an extension pole changes the angle, the pressure, and the feedback you feel through the tool. This takes specific practice.
Safety. Understanding safe ladder use, proper body positioning, and when to use pole technique instead of climbing. This isn't optional — it's the foundation of a professional operation.
None of these things are complicated. But all of them require practice. And practising wrong is worse than not practising at all, because you develop bad habits that become harder to fix the longer you do them.
